Puig is a Spanish fashion and fragrance company, family-owned, founded in 1914 by Antoni Puig i Castelló in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Known for its entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, and passion for innovation, Puig has established itself as a competitor in the beauty and fashion industries. The company operates across the three categories of prestige beauty: fragrances, makeup, and dermocosmetics, and focuses on empowering people to strengthen their self-esteem and find their own expression.
The company began by directing its business toward the sectors of cosmetics and fragrances. In 1922, Puig presented Milady, the first lipstick made in Spain. The 1940s saw the launch of Agua Lavanda Puig, which became one of the company’s flagship products. During this period, the headquarters moved to a building on Calle Travessera de Gràcia, in the Gràcia district of Barcelona, where it remained until 2014.
Puig’s international expansion began in 1959 with the construction of a new factory in the Besòs industrial estate, in Barcelona, and the opening of its first branch office outside Spain, in the United States. In 1968, Puig opened a branch in Paris and incorporated the brand of the Spanish designer Paco Rabanne. The collaboration led to the launch of the fragrance Calandre in 1969. In 1976, the company built a perfumery factory in Chartres, France, and in 1987 acquired the fashion house of Paco Rabanne.
The 1980s marked a significant milestone in the company’s international expansion with the agreement with Venezuelan designer Carolina Herrera in New York City to create and commercialize its fragrances. In 1995, Carolina Herrera’s fashion business area also joined Puig. In 1997, the company reached an agreement with Antonio Banderas to create and commercialize its fragrance brand. In 1998, Puig acquired the Nina Ricci brand, further expanding its prestigious portfolio of brands.
In the 2000s, Puig acquired several Spanish companies, including Perfumes Gal and Myrurgia, incorporating brands such as Adolfo Dominguez, Massimo Dutti, and Heno de Pravia. The company also collaborated with the Japanese fashion firm Comme des Garçons and the Italian brand Prada.
Marc Puig, a member of the third generation of the family, took over as General Management and CEO position in 2007. In 2008, the company reached an agreement with Colombian singer Shakira for the development of its fragrances. In 2009, the company changed its name from Puig Beauty & Fashion Group to simply Puig.
In 2010, Puig added the brand of the Italian designer Valentino, and in 2011, it acquired a majority stake in the fashion house of Jean Paul Gaultier. In 2014, Puig celebrated its centenary with the inauguration of its new headquarters, Torre Puig, located in Plaza de Europa, Hospitalet de Llobregat, designed by architect Rafael Moneo and GCA Arquitectos.
In 2015, Puig acquired the fragrance brands Penhaligon’s and L’Artisan Parfumeur. The company continued expanding its portfolio in 2018, acquiring majority stakes in niche brands such as Dries Van Noten, Eric Buterbaugh Los Angeles, and an agreement with Christian Louboutin to develop its beauty business.
Today, Puig is present in more than 150 countries and has offices in 29 of them, with a brand portfolio that includes Carolina Herrera, Paco Rabanne, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dries Van Noten, Nina Ricci, Byredo, among others.
