Pierre Aulas, a perfumer and olfactive consultant, discovered the world of perfumery by chance. Unlike many people in his profession, Pierre did not come from Grasse and had no family ties to the fragrance industry. At the age of 26, he found himself in charge of developing marketing for beauty products at a major mass-market distributor. There, he had his first encounters with ingredient companies and perfumers working on his product line. His sense of smell was noticed by the perfume house Mane, based in Grasse, which hired him and trained him.
The combination of Pierre Aulas’ marketing skills and olfactive sharpness made him the link between brands and the “noses”. Firmenich, finally, offered him a position overseeing key accounts and fine fragrances. Pierre accepted on the condition that he would be able to work on Mugler perfume projects. This turning point in his life allowed him to work closely with Véra Strubi, the former president of Thierry Mugler Parfums, on various successful projects over a decade.
In 2001, Pierre launched his olfactive development consulting company, Art of Nose Consulting. With Véra Strubi as his first client, he quickly earned the trust of other prestigious brands, such as Azzaro, Swarovski, Fendi, Pucci, L’Occitane, Jil Sander, Chloé, Cavalli and Balenciaga. Among the most popular perfumes he has created are Mugler Alien Essence Absolue, Miu Miu Miu Miu L’Eau Rosée, Alexander McQueen Luminous Orchid, Mugler Oriental Extreme and Egofacto Prends Garde a Toi.
Pierre Aulas’ approach to creating perfumes is based on his understanding of marketing and olfaction. As an olfactive consultant, he has played a key role in closing the gap between brands and perfumers, guiding the development of innovative and successful fragrances. His creative spirit and passion for the art of perfumery are evident in every scent he creates.
In addition to his career in perfumery, Pierre is a ceramicist who has perfected the Japanese raku technique. He has combined his two passions by handcrafting enamelled candle jars and candles for the Bon Parfumeur brand in his studio in Burgundy.
Pierre Aulas and his partner Bertrand have lived in a house with a brick-and-flint façade in Burgundy for nearly 16 years. Surrounded by a “dishevelled” French garden, Pierre has found inspiration in nature and has cultivated a vegetable garden and a fruit-garden on the property.
